What is an E-Cigarette?
An e-cigarette device is used to heat a liquid substance and when heated to a certain temperature, creates an aerosol that can then be inhaled. E-cigarettes have many different names such as: E-cigs, e-hookahs, mods, vape pens, vapes, tank systems, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2016). In 2017, 8.6 percent of 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th graders in Utah claimed to have used e-cigarettes or vaped in the past 30 days (Student Health and Risk Prevention Assessment Survey, 2017).

E-cigarettes are a type of tobacco product because of the nicotine which is found in the tobacco plant. It is commonly included in e-cigarette liquids/juices. Nicotine and other tobacco components found in e-cigarettes can be addictive, cause damage to the brain, and increase the likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2016). In Utah 2017, 12.7 percent of 12th graders who had used a vaping product in the past year, claimed to have used a liquid/juice containing nicotine (Student Health and Risk Prevention Assessment Survey, 2017).
